"The French have a wonderful word: 'Antididact' and this applies to me as I am mostly self-taught. My pictures are based on ordinary, everyday scenes. I love exploring the abstract shapes made by commonplace, unremarkable things. I base my work on my own observation and on my own photographs and sketches. I am happiest painting townscapes, landscapes and seascapes. Raoul Dufy, Matisse, John Piper and Paul Nash are my current favourite artists but I enjoy visiting exhibitions and seeing the work of all kinds of artists: well known and new comers. I've come very late to oils but I adore them now. As to subjects; villages, seascapes, townscapes and houses are my thing."
